History
St Andrew’s stands amid fields, with a commanding view of Skiddaw and the Northern Fells. A fine example of Norman architecture, its walls include stones from Hadrian’s Wall. The church is uncluttered and light and the original roof timbers support a magnificent sandstone roof. It still retains is original 12th century chancel arch. The font is late 12th century and has a different design on each of its four sides. The church’s south aisle was added in the late 19th century. There are two church bells, of which the tenor is 14th century. Inside the church the silence is complete; open the door for the sound of birdsong. Leave feeling refreshed.
